GPS.

I wanted to play with the new handheld GPS unit, so I took a quick and easy 5.5 mile urban hike around the Willamette River to generate some tracking data to experiment with. I crossed Hawthorne Bridge, went north on the Eastbank Esplanade (which includes a 1,200 foot floating walkway, the longest IN TEH WERLD! PWNED!!), crossed back over Steel Bridge, took an out-and-back detour on the walkway in front of the condos north of Steel Bridge, then finished the loop back south along Waterfront Park. A map generated by the GPS and MapSource software is here.

The features on this GPS is just sick. It tracks distance traveled, elevation changes, average speed, compass, autosets time of day, sunrise/sunset time for each day, stopwatch, calendar, calculator, and "sight 'n go" navigation (point unit at a far point such as a mountain peak to generate a waypoint, then calculate route and distance to it). Just before bed, I figured out how to upload more detailed maps from the MapSource software to the handheld unit. There's supposed to be all sorts of find waypoint features that I haven't even touched yet. Who knows what else this thing does. I'm pretty sure it's smarter than I am.

I'm thinking of dropping the gym membership. Nothing is more boring than grinding on an elliptical machine, especially when there are so many great hiking and running trails nearby. I can always replace the strength training with ashtanga and get similar benefits. Something to think about.

The real question....

Does it give you a blow job and make you a ham sandwich, though? =p

I'm suprised your apartment complex doesn't have some sort of weight/workout room. What are you going to do in the winter when it's BLIZZZZZARDING OMGZ!?...for a workout?

Re: The real question....

Oooh. I almost did that on our ski trip last winter.

There's always cross country skiing too, which I've heard is quite the workout. =)

Re: The real question....

Or maybe summit-climbing! :D

The good thing is that Portland gets very little snow. It only averages 5" a year. However, there's plenty of snow year-round only an hour away at Mount Hood. That was one of things that drew me to Portland. I wouldn't have to deal with snow on a daily basis, but if I want snow then it's close by.

From all the reviews I've read, you can't go wrong with any of the Garmin units. I can't wait to christen this litte guy on a real hike!

Yes. Outdoor walking/running, pushups, crunches, and possibly a chinup bar, and who needs a gym?

Exactly. And one gets fresh air in all those activities.

looks like a great walk you took yesterday.

I don't blame you for wanting to drop the gym membership. The only thing I've been using it for lately are the classes and weights, i haven't been on an elliptical machine in weeks.

Was that urban hike in one of your books?

Yeah, it was a watered down version of the Willamette River hike in the 60 Hikes in 60 Miles: Portland book. The full hike is 11 miles and runs up both banks of the Willamette between Sellwood Bridge and Steel Bridge. It's not that difficult since there's very little elevation change.

why pay for a gym when you can run up a mountain with an 90 pound pack on your back for free?

Right on! Why pay for pain when I can get it for free?
